Frank Lowy channels his inner Grant Hackett by Bryce Corbett
Move over Grant Hackett – there’s a new senior citizen making waves in the swimming pool.
Proving it’s never too late to discover your sporting mojo, 85-year-old shopping centre supremo and football enthusiast, Frank Lowy has been taking private swimming lessons to perfect his stroke.
Under the expert tutelage of swim coach, Vlad Mravec, the silver-haired shark has been busily working on his freestyle, submitting to regular sessions in the Lowy family pool in Watson’s Bay.
We hear his mastery of the Australian crawl is no mean feat. Until the intervention of Vlad The Enforcer, Lowy’s aquatic repertoire was limited to a very basic, albeit functional, backstroke of sorts.
Now he’s churning up the pool like a latter-day Thorpie. Well, maybe not quite.
When he’s not being the Lawrie Lawrence to billionaires, Mravec spends his time drilling squads of swimmers in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs – prepping some of them for marathon open water swims.
Might we see Lowy cap a lifetime of corporate achievement with a tilt at the English Channel? We live in hope.
