Grateful to the Ocean

Respecting Sea Country – A Simple Practice Before and After Every Ocean Swim

“The ocean owes us nothing. Every safe swim is a gift.”

One of the biggest challenges for many ocean swimmers is not the distance—it is fear.

Fear of sharks, jellyfish, rough conditions, deep water, or simply the unknown can stop us from fully enjoying the experience. These feelings are natural, but they should not define our relationship with the ocean.

At Vladswim, we believe that the ocean is not something to conquer—it is something to respect.

Inspired by the traditions of Australia’s First Nations Peoples and their deep respect for Sea Country, we encourage every swimmer to begin each swim with a moment of gratitude rather than fear.

A simple moment of reflection or prayer helps calm the mind, focus our attention, and reminds us that we are entering the ocean as respectful visitors. It encourages awareness of our surroundings, respect for marine life, and appreciation for the opportunity to swim in one of nature’s most beautiful environments.

For thousands of years, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples have cared for Australia’s land, rivers, and oceans. Many First Nations communities describe the ocean as Sea Country—a living place with its own spirit, stories, history, and deep cultural significance.

As swimmers, we are privileged to enter these waters.

With that privilege comes responsibility.

Before Every Swim

Before entering the water, pause for just a few quiet moments.

Take a deep breath.

Look across the ocean.

Feel the wind.

Listen to the waves.

Slow your breathing.

Then quietly acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the Sea Country where you are about to swim.

You may like to say:

“Thank you, Ocean, for welcoming me today.
I enter your waters with respect, gratitude and humility.
May I swim with awareness, care for the environment, kindness towards all living creatures, and respect for this Sea Country.
May this be a safe, enjoyable and peaceful swim for everyone.”

Whether spoken aloud or silently in your heart, this simple practice reminds us that we are guests in the ocean.

We believe that beginning each swim with gratitude and respect helps us approach the water with a calm mind, greater awareness, and a positive attitude—qualities that support better decision-making and a more enjoyable swimming experience.

After Every Swim

When your swim is finished, pause once more before leaving.

Take one final look across the ocean.

Take a deep breath.

Then simply say:

Thank you.

Thank the ocean for allowing you to share its waters.

Thank the people who swam beside you and those who kept you safe.

Leave nothing behind except your footprints.

Take with you the memories, the lessons, and the joy that only the ocean can give.

More Than Swimming

This simple practice reminds us that swimming is about much more than distance, speed, or achieving a goal.

It is about building a lifelong relationship with the ocean—a place that challenges us, teaches us, inspires us, and gives us moments of peace.

At Vladswim, we believe that every great ocean swimmer is not only physically strong but also respectful of the environment, the culture, the marine life, and the waters they are privileged to swim in.

The ocean gives us so much.

The least we can do is enter with respect and leave with gratitude.
