Lake Griffin Canberra Swim Preparation

Unique freshwater open water swim event in the heart of Australia’s capital city. Established in 2004, the initial distance was 9 km, spanning from one point of Lake Burley Griffin to the city centre. The swim route offers a fantastic experience, starting from the national park and leading to the centre of Canberra, providing swimmers with exceptional views of iconic landmarks such as Government House, Parliament House, the National Museum, National Gallery, and other famous buildings in Australia.

Since 2022, the swim organizers have extended the distance to 10 km, making it a qualifying swim for other long-distance swim events. Widely regarded as one of the best lake swims in the country, this event is a must for open water enthusiasts looking for a challenging yet scenic swim experience.

Lake Griffin Swim Preparation

Participating in the Lake Griffin Swim is an integral part of preparing for long-distance swims in February or March. 

It’s a fantastic opportunity to kick off the Summer season with your first freshwater open water swim event. 

The preparation program begins in September and spans 12 weeks, covering all essential aspects of training. This includes regular pool sessions and challenging long-distance swims ranging from 3 to 10 km. Completing the 10 km swim not only adds to your swimming achievements but also contributes to your overall knowledge and readiness for becoming a Marathon Ocean swimmer.

What’s Included in the Program?

  • A personalised 12-week preparation plan tailored to your swim goal, including swim distance per session, intensity, ocean swim distance, and recovery guidelines.
  • Four pool sessions per week, covering distances of 4 to 4.4 km per session.
  • Saturday long-distance swims ranging from 5 km to 10 km.
  • Comprehensive preparation manual with all necessary information.
  • Ongoing support and motivation from Vlad as your coach.
  • Guidance on recovery techniques and nutrition.
  • Team camaraderie and support throughout your preparation.
  • Keeping track of your progress by recording your swims in your logbook.
